The validity of a Romanian electronic motorway vignette is verified automatically using the vehicle registration number through camera systems installed on roads where a vignette is required. If the system determines that there is no valid Rovinieta registered for the vehicle, the vehicle operator may be fined. For the control system, it does not matter whether the discrepancy was caused by an oversight or by incorrectly entered registration details. Before entering a road where a vignette is required, it is therefore advisable to make sure that the Rovinieta is registered for the correct vehicle registration number and corresponds to your vehicle.

May I encounter additional charges in Romania besides the electronic motorway vignette?

Yes. A Rovinieta does not cover all charges associated with driving in Romania. Separate charges apply, for example, for crossing the Fetești–Cernavodă Bridge on the A2 motorway towards the Black Sea or when using certain bridges across the Danube, such as Giurgiu (Romania) – Ruse (Bulgaria) or Calafat (Romania) – Vidin (Bulgaria). If your journey takes you to the Romanian Black Sea coast or continues into Bulgaria, we recommend taking these additional charges into account when planning your route.

Is the 60-day Romanian electronic motorway vignette available for every vehicle?

Yes – since 1 October 2026 the 60-day rovinieta is offered for all four vehicle categories A to D. Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes no longer buy a rovinieta from 1 October 2026 – they pay the distance-based TollRo toll.

Is the 1-day Rovinieta valid for 24 hours or only until midnight of the selected day?

A 1-day Rovinieta is valid only until midnight of the selected day. If you purchase it on the day of travel, for example at 14:00, it will remain valid only until 23:59 on the same day. If you buy the 1-day Rovinieta in advance and choose a future start date, the electronic motorway vignette will be valid from 00:00 until 23:59 on the selected day. When purchasing, we therefore recommend paying close attention to the selected validity date, especially if you plan to travel during the night.

Which vehicles require an electronic motorway vignette in Romania?

In Romania, an electronic motorway vignette is required for most motor vehicles using chargeable roads. This requirement applies in particular to passenger cars, vans, motorhomes, buses and lorries. Motorcycles are exempt from the obligation to purchase a Rovinieta. If you are travelling with a trailer or a caravan trailer, a separate electronic motorway vignette is not required for it.

Yes. Many drivers believe that a Rovinieta is required only on motorways and express roads. In Romania, however, it is also mandatory on most national roads (DN). This means that you may need a valid Rovinieta even when travelling outside the motorway network, for example between cities (such as Brașov – Sibiu or Cluj-Napoca – Oradea) or when driving towards certain border crossings (such as Nădlac, Borș or Giurgiu). Before travelling, we therefore recommend checking whether your planned route includes roads where a Rovinieta is required.

When will my Romanian electronic motorway vignette become valid?

The start of validity of your Romanian electronic motorway vignette depends on the date you select when placing your order. If you choose the current day, the Rovinieta becomes valid as soon as it is registered in the electronic system. If you select a future start date, the Rovinieta will be valid from 00:00 on the selected day. We will keep you informed about the processing of your order by email. First, you will receive confirmation that your payment has been received, followed by a separate email confirming the activation of your Rovinieta, including information about its validity period.

What should I do if I entered the wrong registration number when purchasing a Romanian electronic motorway vignette?

An incorrectly entered registration number cannot be corrected through our website after the order has been completed. In this case, you need to contact Compania Națională de Administrare a Infrastructurii Rutiere S.A. (CNAIR), the official issuer of Romanian electronic motorway vignettes.
